The Story

These handcrafted earrings celebrate Vincent van Gogh's (1853 - 1890) Irises, one of the Getty's most exceptional paintings. Soft patinated bronze and delicate glass petal accents capture the beauty and exquisite detail Van Gogh captured in his painting.

- Dimensions: 1 1/4 inches L x 3/4 inch W
- Materials: Bronze, glass
- Made in the USA by artist Michael Michaud
- Item #: 3725BZ

In 1889, while staying in Saint-Rémy, France, Vincent van Gogh created nearly 130 paintings. Within his first week there, he began Irises, inspired by the natural surroundings of the asylum’s garden where he was recovering from episodes of self-harm and hospitalization. The cropped composition is divided into broad areas of vivid color, with monumental irises overflowing its borders.

Each iris is distinct. Van Gogh carefully observed their movements and forms, capturing a variety of curved silhouettes defined by wavy, twisting, and curling lines
