The Story

Resin ornament featuring a detail of a lion found on a Greek black-figure Kylix vessel in the Getty Museum's antiquities collection.

- Dimensions: 2.5 x 1.25 in.
- Material: Resin
- Includes gift packaging
- Made in China
- Item #: ORNVSL3

The snarling lion that inspired the design for this ornament decorates the interior of the Lakonian black-figure kylix or cup shown above from the Getty Museum's antiquities collection. The placement of the lion's body, with its head turned back and its paw raised, serves to animate the creature and also represents the painter's attempt to find a creative way to fill the cup's circular interior. Simple rays, banding, and palmettes at the handles decorate the cup's exterior.
