Aphrodite arose from the sea foam on a giant shell and was then brought by a sea breeze to the shore. Known in Roman mythology as Venus, she was the patron of love and lovers, and enjoyed trapping other gods in love affairs. Cupid is considered her child born from the affair with Mars, the God of War.
